Rules
The digital image is square, from 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels. We deliver 600 × 600. JPEG, 24-bit color, sRGB.
The file must be 240 kB or smaller, and the compression ratio must be 20:1 or less. At 600 × 600 that floor is 54,000 bytes (width × height × 3 / 20). We will not compress the face to sneak under a cap.
Head, top of hair to chin, is 50% to 69% of the height. Use 25–35 mm for the paper size. An older overview line that says 22 mm disagrees with the template and the FAQ. Eyes are 56% to 69% from the bottom. White or off-white background. No glasses. Do not digitally alter the portrait, and do not remove red-eye in an editor.
Do
- Take the photo with a camera, then let the tool crop it. Do not photograph a printed picture.
- Leave a little wall around your hair and shoulders.
- Look straight ahead with a closed mouth.
- Check the file size on the download before you upload it to the CEAC form.
Don't
- Do not submit a PNG, a HEIC, or a rectangle.
- Do not wear glasses.
- Do not add a digital smile, a blur, or a new hairline.
- Do not use a busy room, a window, or a shadow as the background.
