Size
| Pixels | 1200 × 1500 |
|---|---|
| Size | The online service checks pixels, not millimetres. 1200 × 1500 is the file we save. A paper print, when one is required, is 35 × 45 mm with the head 29–34 mm. |
| DPI | See the size note |
| Head | Digital framing keeps the shoulders in. Printed copies use a 29–34 mm head on a 35×45 mm crop. |
| Eyes | 52–70% from the bottom. HM Passport Office does not publish an eye line. This band is ours. |
| Background | Light grey or Cream |
| File | JPEG, at least 50 KB, up to 10 MB |
| Glasses | Take them off if you can. No tint, no glare. |
| How recent | Taken in the last month. A new passport needs a new photo even if you look the same. |
Rules
A digital photo must be in color, clear, and unaltered by computer software, at least 600 pixels wide and 750 tall, between 50 KB and 10 MB. No maximum pixel size is published, and the file format is not stated. We deliver a 1200 × 1500 JPEG.
Include your head, shoulders, and upper body. The guidance says not to crop tightly, because the service crops for you. Use a plain light background — cream or light grey works — with no other people or objects, and no red-eye.
Face forward, mouth closed, eyes open and visible, no hair across the eyes. Take glasses off if you can. A head covering is only for religious or medical reasons. Printed photos, when a paper form needs them, are 45 mm high by 35 mm wide, and the head from crown to chin is 29–34 mm. The bundle's sheet uses that tighter crop.
Do
- Stand about half a metre from the wall and have the camera about 1.5 metres away.
- Leave shoulders and some upper body in the digital file.
- Use a cream or light grey wall, not a patterned one.
- Take the photo in the last month if you are applying online.
Don't
- Do not crop the digital file down to a tiny face. The online checker expects the wider shot.
- Do not wear sunglasses, tinted glasses, or a fashion hat.
- Do not smile, frown, or let hair cover your eyes.
- Do not upload a photo that has been filtered or retouched.
