Rules
The printed photo is 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm). The head, chin to the top of the head, is 1 inch to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm), which is 50% to 68.75% of the square. We save a 600 × 600 JPEG. Online renewal does not publish a pixel size. It accepts JPG, PNG, HEIC, or HEIF from 54 KB to 10 MB.
The passport page does not state an eye line. The visa composition template, for the same 2×2 format, puts the eyes 1⅛ to 1⅜ inches from the bottom (56.25% to 68.75%). We use that as a warning, not as a passport-page rule.
Background is plain white or off-white, with no shadow. Expression is neutral, or a natural smile with the mouth closed. Both eyes open. Babies' eyes need not be fully open. Glasses are not accepted. A medical exception needs a signed doctor's note. The State Department says it rejects photos changed with software, filters, or AI, including a retouched background or a digitally removed red-eye.
- Passport photos (paper applications)
- Uploading a digital photo (online renewal)
- Visa photo composition template (eye line used as a warning)
Do
- Face the camera with your head level and both ears roughly equal.
- Stand a step away from the wall so your shadow does not fall on it.
- Use even daylight. A window in front of you is enough.
- Keep a neutral mouth and look straight into the lens.
Don't
- Do not wear glasses, sunglasses, or a hat.
- Do not smile with teeth, squint, or turn a shoulder toward the camera.
- Do not use a beauty filter, skin smoother, AI edit, or a photo of another photo. The State Department says it checks for AI.
- Do not crop so tightly that the top of your hair is already cut off.
