Rules
GOV.UK says the visa photo is a JPG at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels high, 50 KB to 6 MB, vertical, and not mirrored or flipped. Include the head, shoulders, and upper body. The service crops it. The background is plain and light, with contrast and no shadow behind you.
Expression is plain, mouth closed, eyes open, no hair over the eyes. Glasses are to be avoided unless you need them. No tint, no glare, no frames covering the eyes. The photo must not be the same one as in your passport, and it must not be a photo of a photo.
Children under 6 need not hold a plain expression or look at the camera. Under 1, the eyes may be closed. Photo age is not stated on this page.
